Royal Bafokeng Stadium
The Royal Bafokeng Stadium was originally built in anticipation of the 1995 Rugby World Cup but has since become a venue predominantly for football. Renovations for the World Cup that were completed in March 2009 include expanding the seating capacity from 38,000 to 42,000, new scoreboards and lighting, and new media and PA system. Most importantly for the comfort of the fans, a cantilevered roof was added to cover virtually all seating.
South Africa triumphed over Bakino Faso in the 2001 FIFA World Cup qualifying in 2001, 2-1 here. The stadium also hosted four of the matches for the FIFA Confederation Cup in 2009.
The traffic infrastructure has been given special attention in anticipation of the number of fans who will be attending the four group stage events and the one second round game here. Because the nearest airport is 50km away in Sun City, there will likely be a huge number of cars on the roads as driving from Pretoria or Johannesburg only take an hour and half. Park & Ride areas will be operational during the World Cup situated off main roads leading into Rustenburg . One will be at the Kloof Holiday Resort, 500m from the Kloof Interchange of the N4. Another site will be between the city centre and the stadium on the old N4 and a final site will be located on the R565, just outside the city centre. There will also be a large number of shuttle buses to and from the stadiums on match days.
