Loftus Versfeld Stadium
Loftus Versfeld Stadium is one of the oldest sporting venues in South Africa. It was initially built in 1903 and named after Robert Owen Loftus Versfeld, the man who brought organised sports to Pretoria.
Only minor renovations were needed to make the venue World Cup ready and its 51,762 seats will welcome fans as ardently as for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, Rugby, African Cup of Nations and a bevy of concerts the venue has hosted. Scoreboards, lighting and the sound system were the only updates needed to make the venue ready for a world class event. The stadium is an emblem to South Africans because this is where they first beat a European team, a 1999 defeat of Sweden, 1-0.
For transportation to the venue limited Park and Ride facilities will be located throughout Pretoria. Pretoria Technical High School, on the corner of Wessels and Park Streets with space for 460 vehicles and Pretoria Sport Union, located at the intersection of Totius Street and Queen Wilhelmina Avenue in Lukasrand, with space for 700 vehicles. There will also be a special pedestrian walkway leading to the stadium. Five group two matches will be played here and South Africa will be playing here on 16 June.
