Free State Stadium
Free State Stadium has undergone renovations that not only take its seating capacity from 36,538 up to the 48,000 necessary to host first stage and second round matches but they have also updated all of the lighting, the scoreboards and the media facilities in order to ready the venue. The renovations were extremely costly and have given the home teams of the Free State Cheetahs and the Bloemfontein Celtic a world class home playing field.
The stadium is surrounded by entertainment. Not only are there additional sports facilities, but there are also Kingspark Zoological Gardens, the National Museum and Du Plessis Theatre in addition to ample shopping and restaurants.
No stranger to international competition, the stadium played host to games in both the IRB Rugby World Cup in 1995 and the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996. More recently the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup held matches here. South Africa will playing here on the game on 22 June.
For transportation during the World Cup events there will be Park and Walk facilities at Dr Viljoen School, Fontein Street Municipal Garage, Grey School College, HTS Louis Botha School and St Andrew School. There will also be Park and Ride facilities at Northridge Mall situated adjacent to Eufees Road, and the Old Bloemfontein Race Course on the N8 near Bloemfontein Airport, University of the Free State which is West of Bloemfontein and The Windmill Casino between the N1 and city centre.
