Tshwane/Pretoria

Tshwane/Pretoria’s legacy is shown in the city’s numerous museums and monuments and is mixed together by arts and craft markets, making the city alive with a exceptional blend of old and new.

Tshwane/Pretoria is the government area of South Africa. With the Union Buildings housing the management of the country whilst also was being the location for the presidential inauguration of Nelson Mandela.

The city boasts a lively vibe with an array of museums, buildings and art centres. With Church Square and the State Theatre hosting international and national shows. There are also 2 nature reserves that allows visitors to view various wildlife such as cheetah and jackal and many more.

The first set of people to put down roots along the Tshwane River were the Ndebele people, which was named after a Ndebele chief. Later on it became Pretoria. Between 1956 and 1961 The Rivonia Treason Trial was held in Pretoria in which Nelson Mandela was one of the people prosecuted. Ironically the same accused became sworn into office as elected president of South Africa in 1994. Pretoria is now part of Tshwane.

Tshwane/Pretoria has been fortunate to produce some of the country’s top football players. The first professional teams of Tshwane/Pretoria were Arcadia and Berea Park. But in time other teams have formed and kept up the winning ways, with Mamelodi Sundowns breaking the Professional Soccer League Record by with 5 league titles in a row. The have also earned the nickname the Brazilians due to their blue and yellow kit.
