Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth

Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth is home to perfect beaches in a sheltered bay, making it wonderful for a range of water activities. For those wishing to take it easy and do a spot of sun bathing then King’s Beach and Hobie are the ideal location.

The city’s buildings represent the changes that have taken place as far back as the 19th century. The Opera House being a classic example of the Victorian structural design and hosts some of the greatest collection of Art Nouveau buildings in South Africa. With its busy port the city is a place in which to discover attraction of the Eastern Cape.

Originally home to the hunter-gatherers Khoi and San. British settlers arrived in Port Elizabeth in 1820 and the port quickly became the gateway for settlers into the boundaries of South Africa. Port Elizabeth got its name after Sir Rufane it in honor of his wife Elizabeth who had died in India.

In 2000 Port Elizabeth become part of the Nelson Mandela Bay in honor of Nelson Mandela and also includes the cities of Dispatch and Uitenhage in its area.

Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth last had a professional football team in 1997 and were called Michau Warriors and got relegated the season. The city has hosted is the quarter-final of CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 1996.
