Durban

Durban part of the eThekwini metropolitan municipality and also the third most populous city in South Africa. Due to the city’s warm climate and beaches it is a major attraction to tourists.

Very little is known about the history of the first residents as there is no written history until first mentioned by Vasco da Gama a Portuguese explorer who came upon the KwaZulu-Natal coast when searching for a route to get to India from Europe. It was Christmas 1497 when he landed hence the name ‘Natal’which means Christmas in Portuguese.

Durban is now the busiest container port in Africa, with the Golden Mile created as welcoming tourists in the 1970’s.

In the 1990’s Durban lost its international holiday superiority to Cape Tow, but nether less remains a popular destination.

With its long coastline covered by the Indian Ocean and rocky mountains, it is an perfect destination. With its variety of cuisine available copied from the traditions from its varied population. The main influences in Durban are African, Indian and Western.

The Golden Mile

This is the nickname for the beaches that run along the Indian Ocean. Offering excellent surf waves and wide sandy beaches.

Berea

Once covered by a coastal forest but now completely built up with its long ridge looking over the harbour beaches and city centre.

The place where things are happening in Durban, with plenty of bar’s, cafe’s and restaurants with a friendly atmosphere in great hang out.

Durban Botanical Gardens

Founded in 1849 for the trial of possible commercial crops. Late developing sub-tropical tress, palms and orchids. For over 100 years it has had a mixture of African, Asian and American trees.
